TALIESIN WEST ENTRY GATE
Project type
Architectural Preservation
Year
2019
Location
Scottsdale, AZ
Client
Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation
The design and fabrication studio was tasked with restoring and enhancing the iconic gateway at Taliesin West, the celebrated winter home of Frank Lloyd Wright. The restoration drew on traditional desert masonry techniques, sourcing local sand and stone, just as Wright’s apprentices once did. The team carefully integrated these materials into the structure, preserving the historic aesthetic while improving durability and functionality. A repurposed metal gate from the original design was thoughtfully incorporated, blending the old with the new in a seamless and respectful homage to Wright's architectural legacy.
Throughout the project, the studio coordinated closely with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, along with 180 Degrees acting as the general contractor, our team was responsible for executing the technical aspects of the work. Precision and craftsmanship were essential in ensuring the gateway not only met structural and aesthetic requirements but also provided improved wayfinding and security for the over 100,000 visitors who come to Taliesin West each year. By honoring the original design while employing modern fabrication techniques, the studio revitalized this historic entrance, continuing the legacy of hands-on craftsmanship at Taliesin West.
